Skinny jeans

Published: December 19, 2006

Skinny jeans are a style of jeans that have a snug fit all the way through the legs and end in a small leg opening. In some styles, zippers are needed at the bottom of the leg to facilitate pulling them over your feet. Stretch denim, with anywhere from 2% to 4% spandex, allows skinny jeans to have a super slim fit. Skinny jeans are most often worn tucked into boots or scrunched up over high heel shoes making them ideal for showing off designer footwear.

The Skinny jeans style of pants for women originated in the 1950s with popular female stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Sandra Dee wearing their pants very slim to the ankle. Skinny jeans became most notable with the birth of rock 'n' roll in the ’50s, when Elvis donned Skinny jeans and shocked the country with his gyrating dance moves. Skinny jeans and rock 'n' roll were inextricably linked to create the “bad boy” image that remains today. These Skinny jeans may also be considered a part of emo fashion.

Skinny jeans have made a fashion comeback in the last few years. Although they started to show up on designer runways as early as 2002, Skinny jeans become big fashion news until 2005. The style became wildly popular as more and more celebrities were seen wearing them. Supermodel Kate Moss is widely credited with inspiring the Skinny jeans trend, but it could also be seen on many other actresses including Angelina Jolie and Sienna Miller.
